Why is N Seoul Tower famous, and what does the N mean?

It is famous for being visible. The tower stands on Namsan, a wooded hill in the middle of Seoul, so it is in the skyline from most of the city and has been since the structure was finished in August 1975 and opened to the public in October 1980. It was built as a broadcast transmission tower and still is one. As for the letter: there is no authoritative expansion of the N. It was added in 2005 by the concessionaire that runs the observation and restaurant levels, and it is usually explained as standing for “new” and for Namsan. Anyone who tells you it definitely means one specific thing is guessing with confidence.

Namsan Tower, Namsan Seoul Tower, N Seoul Tower

All the same building. Namsan is the hill; the tower sits on top of it; the N was a rebrand. People arrive convinced there are two attractions and go looking for the second one, which does not exist. If a map, a sign or a tour title uses any of those three names, it means this tower, and every route up it is on how to get there.

The other reason people know it

Screen. The tower is a long-standing shorthand for a romantic scene in Korean film and television, largely because of the open padlock terraces and the view behind them, and that is covered on the screen-fame page. The padlocks themselves became an attraction in their own right after 2007.
